Lady Buffs soccer battled an injury-plagued season

The Women’s Soccer team had to climb some high hurdles this year to make it to playoffs, including fighting their own bodies. While the team had an overall regular season record of 9-10-1 ¾ better than five of the other Lone Star Conference teams ¾ and an a LSC record of 9-10-1, only a few of those victories came with a mostly full team available to play.
Throughout the year, the Lady Buffs had six players with season-ending injuries with everything from torn ACLs to fractured ankles. At one point, over a third of the team was on the bench, sidelined with injuries that forced them to miss multiple games.
“It seems like some years, you have a lot of injuries and some years you have very few injuries,” WTAMU Head Trainer Ron Hulsey said. “I just think we are in one of those cycles where the last couple of years we’ve been hit pretty hard, but hopefully we’ll get through this one then have a few years to kind of average it out.” Continue reading
Men’s Soccer Ends Season With a .500 Record
The Buffaloes ended their season with a bittersweet note in the first weekend of November as they played both at home and away.
The team was looking for a chance to keep their October winning streak alive into November as they took on St. Edwards University at home for Senior Night. The Buffs had no problem starting on the right foot as Rodrigo Morino scored 19:35 into the game to give WTAMU the lead.
The Buffs refused to sit on that one goal lead, however, as Isaias Miramontes scored with 1:32 left in the first half to send the Buffs to the locker room up 2-0.
St. Edward’s refused to go without a fight though as they scored with 10 minutes left in the game. The last moments of the game were full of action as the Buffs tried to hold their lead. Ultimately they succeeded, winning the game 2-1 and registering 10 shots for the day. Continue reading
Lady Buffs soccer Falls in Lone Star Conference
The WTAMU Lady Buff soccer team traveled to Abilene to participate in the Lone Star Conference championship tournament on Nov. 3 as the sixth seed. The Lady Buffs defeated Eastern New Mexico 1-0 in the first round but fell to Midwestern State 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals.
The first round game against the ENMU Zias was a knock-down drag-out fight. Neither team was able to score in the first half, and each team’s goalie made four saves in the half. WT outshot the Zias 10-5 during the half.
The Lady Buffs finally broke through at 77:26 into the game. Senior Leslie Briggs’ corner kick tipped off the Zias goalie’s hands and into the net. The 1-0 victory made the Lady Buffs the first six seed to make it out of the first round since WT did it in 2007. Continue reading

Lady Buffs soccer clinches a spot in LSC playoffs
The Lady Buffs have had a rough go lately with a record of four losses in seven games during October. However, the memory of those losses faded away on Oct. 28 as WTAMU clinched a spot in the Lone Star Conference tournament by defeating Eastern New Mexico University 2-1.
ENMU got the first tally when they scored 16:23 into the first half. The Zias gained momentum from the goal but wouldn’t be able to build on it as Lady Buffs player Leslie Briggs tied the game with a little less than four minutes left in the half. Jessie Thomas would break the tie less than two minutes later, sending the teams to intermission with the Lady Buffs leading.
The second half saw a lot of back-and-forth action but there would be no more scores, giving WT the 2-1 win.
“We’ve lost quite a few here lately and it felt really good to win,” Head Coach Chad Webb said. “We paid tribute to our seniors before we played and that’s always a little emotional, but we knew that winning the game today would put us into the conference tournament for sure. I thought that the girls were either motivated by the senior night or the chance to get into the tournament and maybe some other things.”
On Oct. 30, the Lady Buffs returned to No. 2-ranked Abilene Christian University to make up a postponed game from earlier in the season.
The first period saw multiple attempted shots for both teams as the goalkeepers worked overtime to keep their net safe. After 45 minutes, the teams would leave the field tied 0-0. The official shot tally for the half would be 8-5 in favor of the Lady Buffs.
The second period began similarly as both teams assaulted the nets. But a ball finally found the net when ACU’s Ashley Craig got the ball past Yvette Bedoy a little over 30 minutes into the half. WT registered seven shots in the half but wouldn’t score, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 victory.
The team will hit the road for the LSC Women’s Soccer Championship next weekend back in Abilene. Sixth-seeded WT will take on ENMU at 11 a.m. on Nov 3.
“I think we have a good chance [at the tournament],” Midfielder Kelsey Wright said. “There have been times in the past that the sixth-seed team has won the tournament. It’s not out of reach, we just have to put forth our top effort all game, every game.”
The Lady Buffs end the regular season with an overall record of 8-9-1 and an LSC record of 5-8-1.
Men’s Soccer Keeps No-Lose Streak Alive
While the Buffaloes only have one more weekend of games to play this season, the team managed to keep their no-lose streak alive on Oct. 28 against No. 12-ranked University of the Incarnate Word.
“We were hoping to turn it into getting into playoffs, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen,” Forward Wayne Bruton said. “But it’s a positive run for next season.”
The Buffs last loss of the season, and only loss in October, came at the hands of Incarnate Word on Oct. 2 on the road with a score of 3-1. Continue reading
Lady Buffs Lose on Home Turf
The women’s soccer team had a disappointing pair of games this weekend, going 0-2 on The Pitch.
The Lady Buffs stepped on the field on Oct. 21 against the Angelo State Rambelles. WT came out hard but nearly half way into the first, the Rambelles scored. The half would end with Angelo State tallying four shots to WT’s two.
Both teams returned to the field on a mission during the second half but both goalkeepers made sure there was no more numbers put on the scoreboard. The ending score was 1-0 in favor of Angelo State. Continue reading
