In an important series for the No. 24 Lady Buffs, they took on Incarnate Word for a three-game series at home last weekend.
WTAMU dominated the Cardinals in the first game. The Lady Buffs recorded their first run in the bottom of the third off an Allie Cranfill blast. The team wouldn’t look back, getting two more runs in the fifth and making the highlights with five runs to end the game in the sixth inning. The team ended with a shutout against IWU 8-0 with Marci Womack picking up the win with just three hits.
The second game would again be the Cranfill show as she recorded her ninth home run of the season to bring Lacy Seidl and Alyssa Lemos home in the second for a 3-0 lead. The Lady Buffs got a five-run lead before the Cardinals got their first run to take the score to 5-1 in the top of the fourth. However, the Lady Buffs used the seven innings to take the game 7-4. Womack would get her 13th win of the season, only giving up seven hits and two walks.
Saturday afternoon the Lady Buff Yard saw the team attempt a shut out of Incarnate Word, but the game didn’t go as planned. The Cardinals started the scoring in the third and scored in the next two innings to take the lead to 3-0. The sixth inning had no scoring, but IWU put three more runs on the board in the top of the seventh.
The Lady Buffs made a tremendous comeback at the bottom of the seventh when Renee Erwin plated Whitney Midkiff for their first run of the game. Two batters later, Lacey Seidl sent one to center field to score two more runs. However, the Lady Buffs fell short in the last game of the series, ending with a score of 6-3. Amber Spencer picked up the loss in the circle, allowing 11 hits.
“This was a very important weekend,” Outfielder Lacey Seidl said. “We had the same record coming in [as IWU] and I think we played very well. Marci pitched both games very well but then again, we strung hits together and we played as a team.”
The series took the softball team’s record to 25-15 overall and 9-9 in the Lone Star Conference. They return to the field on April 10 against Eastern New Mexico in Portales, N.M. at 3 p.m.
“These last few weekends are going to be crucial, especially this coming up week,” Seidl said. “We’re on the road and as our record shows, we’ve been struggling on the road so it’s important we come out and play like we can play. We can’t just go off and slack it, especially with Eastern. We have to win no matter what.”

A week after winning a weekend series against No. 1 Angelo State, the No. 19 Lady Buffs found a harder fight in Abilene against Abilene Christian.
The first of the three game series saw ACU get off to a running start when they put their first tally on the board in the bottom of the second inning. The team continued its roll throughout the game, registering six points in the seven innings. WTAMU only scored one run during the game in the sixth inning when Kim LeComte sent a solo blast to center field. Marci Womack registered her seventh loss in the circle with the defeat and WT only had four hits during the seven innings.
The second game on Friday kept the Lady Buffs closer to the Wildcats with ACU not scoring until the bottom of the third inning. The team put down two runs and added two more in the fifth and sixth to grab a 4-0 lead. WT rebounded in the sixth inning off of a Renee Erwin bat to bring in two runs. However, the Lady Buffs fell 4-2 in the second game of the series. Adriana Garcia would record the loss on her record, giving up four runs on eight hits.
With the series already lost, WT returned to the field on Saturday afternoon to try and prevent a weekend sweep. However, offensively the team struggled, recording only three hits. In their earliest scoring of the weekend, the Wildcats put their first tally on the board in the bottom of the first inning.
It would take five innings for another tally to be put on the board and it would once again be ACU getting on the board. WT had a chance to score in the seventh inning when Renee Erwin was sent to first plate after she was hit by a pitch. However, three quick outs later, WT left Abilene with a weekend record of 0-3. Marci Womack picked up the loss again in the circle to take her season record to 11-8.
“The underlying thought of the entire weekend was that we just couldn’t create any offense and that was very frustrating,” Head Coach Kevin Blaskowski said.
The Lady Buffs now sit with an overall record of 23-14 and a Lone Star Conference record of 7-8. The team returns to Lady Buff Yard on April 5-6 for a three-game series against Incarnate Word. The first game in the series is set for 5 p.m. on Thursday.
“It’s a pivotal series for us. The winner of this series moves into fifth place in the conference and it’s going to be critical,” Blaskowski said.
The unpredictable Canyon weather provided Lady Buff softball with a summer-like series on March 23-24 for Military Appreciation Weekend against No. 1 Angelo State. The weekend would prove to be another history-making one for WTAMU as senior Kim LeComte became the all-time leader in runs scored in the Lone Star Conference on Friday with 208 runs.
The first of the three game series at Lady Buff Yard set the stage as Meghan Slattery had an RBI triple in the bottom of the third. Mallory Wyatt had a sacrifice fly to make the lead 2-0. Marci Womack kept Angelo State scoreless, picking up a complete game shutout with only seven hits and no walks. The 2-0 win was Womack’s 10th win of the year.
“I think we’ve kind of found our mark and we’re clicking now,” Catcher Meghan Brown said. “In the beginning, we had a lot of different girls from a lot of different places and were finding out who we are. Now we are just starting to come in to who we are.” Continue reading
The Lady Buffs traveled to Topeka, Kansas on March 9 to take on Washburn in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship.
The Lady Buffs started the game out strong, pacing Washburn in the first four minutes of the contest, but WU shook off WTAMU with an 8-0 run to lead 12-4 with 12 minutes left in the half. The Lady Buffs made multiple comebacks in the first, but went to the locker room down by 14 with a score of 32-18. Continue reading
