Nov. 4 and 5 saw the world’s best horses step onto the historic Churchill Downs track for two days’ worth of racing in a showcase of talent and rivalries.

From Australia to the United States and everywhere in between, horses and horsemen flew to the center of the horseracing universe to match against each other for bragging rights and millions of dollars of purse money. But every one of the 15 races has a unique story that will forever etch it in Breeders’ Cup history.

The first Breeders’ Cup race of the weekend was Friday’s Juvenile Sprint, a new race to the card that stirred up controversy for those that felt the card is already too big. Continue reading

Equestrian team goes to Texas Tech for weekend

The Lady Buffs traveled to Lubbock on Oct. 29 to show in two western shows at Texas Tech for their first official away show of the weekend.

The first show of the day started with multiple classes of reining. The first reining class saw two WTAMU riders hitting the board as Christa Fosburg took third and Hannah Agee took fourth. The second reining class saw WT grab their first blue ribbon of the day as Kristen Liesman won the class with teammate Kelsey Kenson taking third. The last reining class saw similar results to class one as Hannah Welter finished third and Tabatha Taylor took the fifth place ribbon.

Christa Forsburg was seen on the score sheet again in the first class of Open Horsemanship when she finished third. Kristen Liesman won her second class of the day in the second class of Open Horsemanship to add another blue ribbon to her wall. Continue reading

WT equestrian team prepares for IHSA National Championship

The WTAMU Lady Buffs Equestrian team had their first event of the season on Sept. 18-19 as they took on New Mexico State University.

The competition was a scrimmage event to help the team prepare for the rest of the season against teams around Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Individually, team members rode in a head-to-head match against NMSU riders.

On the English side of the show, WT rider Amy Mitchem won her match in Equitation over Fences. Mitchem was also the only WT rider to make her way onto the score sheet in English, tying against her NMSU competitor in Equitation on the Flat.

WT faired better in Western, with three riders tying in their matches. Kelsey Kenson and Kristen Liesman both tied in their reining matches and Christa Forsberg tied in Horsemanship.

“The show really showed us our strengths and weaknesses. This was us after only two weeks of practice. With more time we are going to be unstoppable,” WT rider Livi Ron said.

The team will compete all season in the southern region to qualify for IHSA National Championships in Raleligh, N.C. in the spring and will have two home events this fall.

“The horse show this weekend was a great season opener,” said Mitchem. “I feel like it was very beneficial. I think it was great for us as a team to get out and work together early in the season.”

The team’s next show will take place on Oct. 8 at WT’s Horse Center, where they will take on multiple teams from the region.

The WTAMU Horse Judging team heads to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the All American Quarter Horse Congress.

The group, led by Dr. John Pipkin, is made up of 11 girls. In the past they have earned over 60 team and individual titles. In 2008, the team won the Quarter Horse Congress by 15 points over second place Colorado State University.
While they finished fifth at the event last year, they hope to resume their winning ways this year.

“Everybody really, really wants to win Congress since we didn’t get to last year,” Emily Bruehl said. “Individually, I hope to just do my absolute best since this is my first year judging.”

Team member Christa Forsberg talked about the mental and physical aspects of preparing for an event like Congress.

“Not only do you have to be prepared mentally but physically too because you need to be healthy and practicing a lot,” Forsberg said.

Hillary Finck said she takes every opportunity she gets to practice.

“We always say practice in the shower, practice while driving, and prepare mentally,” Finch said.

While the team would love to win the “Triple Crown” of the Judging World, they are focused on doing the best they can.
