The Buffaloes experienced the high and low points of soccer at The Pitch this weekend, winning their game on Sept. 23 and losing on the 25th.

The first move of Friday’s game was made by Newman University when they scored 20 minutes into the first half. The game looked like it would be another disappointing one for WTAMU as they went scoreless until Michael Williams tied it up soon after the start of the second half. The Buffs weren’t done firing yet and Rodrigo Morin scored only minutes after Williams. Continue reading

WT equestrian team prepares for IHSA National Championship

The WTAMU Lady Buffs Equestrian team had their first event of the season on Sept. 18-19 as they took on New Mexico State University.

The competition was a scrimmage event to help the team prepare for the rest of the season against teams around Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Individually, team members rode in a head-to-head match against NMSU riders.

On the English side of the show, WT rider Amy Mitchem won her match in Equitation over Fences. Mitchem was also the only WT rider to make her way onto the score sheet in English, tying against her NMSU competitor in Equitation on the Flat.

WT faired better in Western, with three riders tying in their matches. Kelsey Kenson and Kristen Liesman both tied in their reining matches and Christa Forsberg tied in Horsemanship.

“The show really showed us our strengths and weaknesses. This was us after only two weeks of practice. With more time we are going to be unstoppable,” WT rider Livi Ron said.

The team will compete all season in the southern region to qualify for IHSA National Championships in Raleligh, N.C. in the spring and will have two home events this fall.

“The horse show this weekend was a great season opener,” said Mitchem. “I feel like it was very beneficial. I think it was great for us as a team to get out and work together early in the season.”

The team’s next show will take place on Oct. 8 at WT’s Horse Center, where they will take on multiple teams from the region.

Buffs Have a Losing Weekend

In a pair of home games this weekend, the WTAMU Buffs worked hard to end their losing streak. However, they dropped their season record to 0-4.

“We’re obviously disappointed with the way we’ve started [this season],” head coach Butch Lauffer said. “With the caliber of players we have, we’re much more capable and the frustration is in beating ourselves. Until we stop doing that, we’re not going to win many games this year.”

The Sept. 16 game was an exciting event for spectators as the Buffs started the weekend off with sudden death overtime against the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds. It took the Greyhounds nearly 97 minutes to score one goal against the Buffs.

The Sept. 18 game started off with a few tense moments as Fort Hays State University scored only 2:26 minutes into the game before scoring another goal 16 minutes in. Continue reading

As the fans root for the players and the cheerleaders rally up the crowd, there is another person on the sidelines making sure everyone gets pumped up during games. Even though Bucky, the WT buffalo mascot, may attend various football, volleyball and basketball games, the person inside the costume remains unknown to most students.

Danny Fuentes, in his disguise, has been a familiar face to many at WT sporting events. It was through his girlfriend, a WT cheerleader, that Fuentes met cheerleading coach Scott Taute and was offered the position as the school mascot. Fuentes decided it could be fun to try out.

“I’m like a fan in a suit,” Fuentes said. “Nobody can see me, but it’s really fun.” Continue reading

The No.19-ranked WTAMU Buffalo football team opened their season against the Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves on Sept. 1 at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. The Thunderwolves kicked a 40-yard field goal with five minutes remaining to take a 26-24 lead. The Buffs offense stalled around the CSU-Pueblo 40-yard line on the next drive, allowing the Thunderwolves to run out the rest of the clock.
WT scored on their first play from scrimmage. After the defense forced a fumble, senior Tommy Hampton ran it in from 24 yards out, giving the Buffs a 7-0 lead at just 2:15 into the game. The Buffs and Thunderwolves went into the half tied at 17-17. Junior Khiry Robinson broke the tie with a 33-yard run with 6:43 left in the third, giving WT a 24-17 advantage. CSU-Pueblo would score nine unanswered points, including two 40-yard field goals to take the 26-24 win.
“The only thing that was going through my mind was ‘touchdown’ and ‘I have to score to help my team win’,” Robinson said of his touchdown.
Robinson is a transfer student from Blinn Junior College; he is originally from Belton, Texas. He has a good appreciation for the legacy that comes with playing for the Buffs.
“It felt good just being on a team that has a great tradition of winning and sending athletes to the NFL,” Robinson said.
The Buffs offense went for 556 total yards; however inconsistency and four turnovers prevented WT from pulling away. Junior quarterback Tanner Marsh went 15 of 24 for 236 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Robinson had eight carries for 116 yards and one touchdown.
WT’s next game will be Sept. 17 against Texas A&M-Kingsville at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
