Men’s basketball takes down Kingsville Javelinas

The WTAMU Buffalo basketball team welcomed the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas to the First United Bank Center on Jan. 28. WT took advantage of a very slow start by TAMUK to pick up a 69-40 victory. The Buffs are now 13-6 overall and 7-5 in Lone Star Conference play.

The Buffs defense started the game extremely strong, not allowing a single Javelina point through the first 13 minutes and 23 seconds of the game, on route to an early 19-0 lead. During the stretch, TAMUK was 0 for 11 from the field, 0 for six from three-point range and 0 for two from the line before finally hitting a three-pointer with 6:37 left in the half.

Buffs lose tough game against Cardinals

The WTAMU Buffalo basketball team hosted the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Jan. 26. The Buffs played sluggishly and never got their shot going in the 63-53 loss. WT is now 12-6 overall and 6-5 in Lone Star Conference play.

The Buffs seemed inspired early when senior Courtney Carr slammed down a dunk to give WT an early 6-2 lead. WT quickly slowed down, making just four of 15 shots from the field at the 7:36 mark of the first half. The Buffs had a chance to take a lead into halftime, but senior Lionel Foster missed a three point shot with 00.3 seconds on the clock giving UIW a 28-26 advantage at the break.

Junior Kennon Washington led the Buffs with seven points at halftime. Junior Donald Sims followed with six and Foster had five points and four assists. WT shot nine of 23 from the field for 39 percent and got outscored 26-12 in the paint. Continue reading

WT Men’s Basketball loses game to ENMU

The WTAMU Buffalo basketball team traveled to Portales, N.M. on Jan. 21 to take on the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds. Both teams traded blows until ENMU pulled out the 68-66 victory over WT.

The Buffs opened the first half by taking an 11-5 lead early. The Greyhounds would answer by going on a 14-1 run with WT ahead 18-11 to give them a 25-19 lead with 2:55 left in the half. ENMU would take a 26-25 lead into the locker room.

Senior Courtney Carr led the Buffs at the break with seven points and four rebounds. Junior Donald Sims followed with six points and junior Kennon Washington had four points.

Buffs Basketball tops Javelinas

The WTAMU Buffalo basketball team traveled to Kingsville to take on the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas on Dec. 3. The Buffs’ 69-61 victory gives them a 6-1 overall record and a 2-0 start in the Lone Star Conference.

Both teams went back and forth as WT took an early 18-14 lead. Back-to-back threes by freshman Tez Dumars boosted the Buffs’ lead to 31-22. Junior Tyshawn Edwards’ three-pointer with less than a minute to go gave WT a 37-27 advantage at halftime.

WTAMU Football team beats Central Missouri Mules

The WTAMU Buffalo football team closed out the season by traveling to Topeka, Kansas to take on the No. 23 Central Missouri Mules in the Lower Inc. Kanza Bowl. WT grabbed its second Kanza Bowl trophy in three years with a 26-7 win.

The Buffs started slowly after having a two-week layoff. As sophomore quarterback Dustin Vaughn threw an interception on the fourth play of the game, the WT defense was able to hold UCM to a three-and-out. Junior Khiry Robinson got the Buffs the first points of the game with a four yard run to put WT up 7-0 with 9:27 remaining in the first. Robinson carried the ball 24 times for 163 yards and the one touchdown on the afternoon.

WT Buffs shutout TAMUC Lions in season finale

The WTAMU Buffalo football team hosted the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions on Nov. 12. WT’s seniors largely contributed to the 49-0 victory on their final game.

The Buffs took advantage of two interceptions by senior Caleb Randolph to take a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. After Randolph’s first pick, sophomores Dustin Vaughn and Lance Ratliff hooked up for an 82 yard touchdown to give WT a 7-0 lead with 9:13 remaining in the quarter. The Buffs took advantage of Randolph’s second interception when Vaughn hit Ratliff again, this time for a 19 yard score that put WT up 21-0 with 1:48 left in the first.

“They had a couple tendencies. [Randolph] watched some film and exploited them for two picks,” said defensive coordinator Colby Carthel. Continue reading

Men’s Soccer Ends Season With a .500 Record

The Buffaloes ended their season with a bittersweet note in the first weekend of November as they played both at home and away.

The team was looking for a chance to keep their October winning streak alive into November as they took on St. Edwards University at home for Senior Night. The Buffs had no problem starting on the right foot as Rodrigo Morino scored 19:35 into the game to give WTAMU the lead.

The Buffs refused to sit on that one goal lead, however, as Isaias Miramontes scored with 1:32 left in the first half to send the Buffs to the locker room up 2-0.

St. Edward’s refused to go without a fight though as they scored with 10 minutes left in the game. The last moments of the game were full of action as the Buffs tried to hold their lead. Ultimately they succeeded, winning the game 2-1 and registering 10 shots for the day. Continue reading

Men’s Soccer Keeps No-Lose Streak Alive

While the Buffaloes only have one more weekend of games to play this season, the team managed to keep their no-lose streak alive on Oct. 28 against No. 12-ranked University of the Incarnate Word.

“We were hoping to turn it into getting into playoffs, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen,” Forward Wayne Bruton said. “But it’s a positive run for next season.”

The Buffs last loss of the season, and only loss in October, came at the hands of Incarnate Word on Oct. 2 on the road with a score of 3-1. Continue reading
