Men’s Soccer Continues Winning Ways On The Road

After a rough start to the season, the Buffaloes continued their winning ways this weekend on the road.

On Friday, the Buffs took on St. Mary’s in San Antonio. The team didn’t wait long to get on the scoreboard as Colin Bjostad used Lukas Garcia’s corner kick to get the ball into the net 37 minutes into the first half. WTAMU didn’t back off after the first goal, as Rodrigo Morin scored with 2:17 left in the first half.

WT continued to power on in the second half. Conrad Grouldbourne scored 15 minutes into the half to up the score to 3-0. The Rattlers wouldn’t give the Buffs a shutout, scoring with 14 minutes left to play to take the score to 3-1. The Buffs had 16 shots in the game compared to St. Mary’s six.

On Sunday, the team was in Laredo to take on Texas A&M International University. The first half was uneventful with just 11 combined shots, sending the teams to the locker rooms tied at 0-0.

The second half saw Conrad Grouldbourne put the first number on the scoreboard 24 minutes into play off of Aidan Hamman’s corner kick. TAMIU wouldn’t go away that easily and scored three minutes after Grouldbourne’s goal, tying the game.

With no goals to break the tie during regulation, the game went into overtime. But even with WT doubling the Dustdevil’s shots 4 to 2, neither team could find the net and the game ended with a 1-1 tie.

“I feel a lot better about the season after this weekend, we played well in both games and are continuing to improve,” forward Wayne Bruton said. “Our record is getting better also, which is giving the team a huge boost.”

While the Buffs’ season record is 5-6-1, their record over the past six games is 4-1-1. They return to action Oct. 21 against Northeastern State in Tahlequa, Okla. at 7 p.m.

Abilene Christian University Wildcats defeat Buffs

The No. 17 WTAMU football team traveled to Abilene on Oct. 15 to face off against the Abilene Christian University Wildcats for ACU’s Homecoming. The Wildcats overpowered the Buffs 28-18, dropping WT to 4-2 overall and 4-1 in Lone Star Conference play.

The first quarter was very defensively oriented. The Buffs stopped ACU on their first drive with two sacks. WT got the first points when sophomore kicker Sergio Castillo, Jr. hit a 44 yard field goal to give the Buffs a 3-0 lead. Continue reading

Lady Buff volleyball gets sweep at A&M Kingsville

The No. 14 WTAMU Lady Buffs volleyball team went on the road to take on the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas on Oct. 15. WT swept the match 25-16, 25-22 and 25-18, improving their record to 21-2 and 12-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

TAMUK built a 17-14 lead during the second set. WT would rally by scoring 11 of the next 17 points to win the set 25-22. Continue reading

On Sept. 17, the WTAMU Cricket Club participated in the seventh annual W.P. Dayawansa Memorial Cricket Tournament at Texas Tech University. The club beat out 16 other teams to win the tournament.

“People didn’t know about WT [at the tournament],” Navdeep Uppal, captain of the Buff Cricket Club, said. “After we won the tournament, people started to know of WTAMU and that there’s a Buff Cricket Club.”

The club is a relatively new organization on campus. They began playing cricket last spring for fun at the tennis courts. Dr. Eddie Henderson, the dean of the College of Education, and Bill Craddock, director of Rec Sports, suggested that the group form a team. Continue reading

The Lady Buffs kicked off their late season home game run this weekend. It didn’t go as well as they may have hoped when they faced some challenges on Friday against Texas A&M Commerce before taking on Texas Woman’s University on Sunday.

“We usually play better at home so we’re hoping to win the rest of our games now,” Center mid Becky McMullan said.

The team’s Oct. 14 game was their first match since their disappointing 5-0 loss on Oct. 7. They came out fighting but the TAM-Commerce Lions put the first tally on the board 23 minutes into the first half. They followed that up with two more goals during the first half to go into intermission 3-0.

During the second half, WTAMU prevented the Lions from adding to their score, but WT couldn’t get the ball into the opposition’s net even with five shots on goal. The game ended after 90 minutes with a score of 3-0 with the teams each registering nine shots for the game. Continue reading

The Buffs were on a mission this weekend for their pair of home games.  The team improved their record to three wins, but was still missing a confidence-building weekend sweep.

On Friday, University of Texas Permian-Basin scored first at the 43:33 mark in the first half. But a little over 14 minutes into the second half, Daniel Angloher tied the game off of a free kick. Only four minutes later, Conrad Gouldbourne scored the game-winning goal, assisted by Abel Olivas’ corner kick.  WT won 2-1 with the Buffs tallying up with 11 shots versus UTPB’s six. Lady Buffs Fall to Midwestern 5-0

Inclement weather postponed the Lady Buffs’ Sunday game against Abilene Christian to a new date yet to be determined. However, Friday’s game saw the Lady Buffs run into possibly an even bigger obstacle than Mother Nature as they faced Midwestern State.

WTAMU’s home game against MSU earlier in the season had taken double overtime to declare WT the winner. However, on MSU’s home turf, the Mustangs quickly made any hope of overtime or even a win fade away. When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard showed a tally of 5-0 in favor of Midwestern.

The first half of the game saw goalie Yvette Bedoy give up three goals. WT then put in goalie Jamie Hall to try and give the Lady Buffs a much-needed spark but Hall gave up two more goals in the second half.

Possibly even more surprising than the blowout was the shot count. Midwestern tallied up 23 shots compared to the Lady Buffs’ four.

“It was really disappointing because we’ve been working really hard and have had a lot of injuries with a lot of our starting players and not just starters, but within our whole team,” Defender Julia Greif said. “It’s disappointing because we did come out with a win last time so that was a little disheartening.”

The loss took WT’s season record to 6-5-1 with a Lone Star Conference record of 3-4-1.

“I feel like the rest of the season is going to be pretty good. The rest of our games are at home, which really motivates us and gives us an extra boost,” Center defender Alex Williams said.

The Lady Buffs return home on Oct. 14 against Texas A&M University-Commerce at 7:30 p.m. at The Pitch.

The No.20 WTAMU Buffalo football team played the Angelo State Rams on Oct.8 for Homecoming. WT’s defense smothered ASU, and allowed the Buffs to pick up a 19-7 victory, the Buffs’ seventh consecutive Homecoming win.

Both teams had trouble getting points in the first half. Rams kicker Jarred Martin missed a 30 yard kick with 8:26 to play in the first half. Then on WT’s ensuing drive, sophomore kicker Sergio Castillo, Jr, missed a 48 yard attempt with 5:04 to go in the second quarter.

“Everything just seemed out of sync tonight for some reason,” Head Coach Don Carthel said. Continue reading

Lady Buffs Sweep Lions in Thrilling Fashion

The No.14 WTAMU Lady Buffs volleyball team hosted the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions on Oct. 6 at The Box. WT swept the match 25-16, 25-14 and 27-25, extending their home winning streak to 23 games.

After the Lions scored the first two points of the first set, the Lady Buffs went on a 5-0 run to make the score 5-2. With a 13-10 lead, WT finished the set with a 12-6 run to win 25-16.

“Since Tarleton, Abilene and Angelo, we noticed a pattern of starting slow, so we’ve been working on that,” Head Coach Jason Skoch said.

The Lady Buffs opened the second set by scoring the first four points. With the score at 8-7, WT got hot and went on a 12-2 run to take a 20-9 lead. TAMUC battled to the finish, but fell a bit short as the Lady Buffs won the set 25-14.

Both teams went almost point-for-point throughout the entire third set. The Lions came within one point of taking the game to a fourth set with a 22-24 lead. WT rallied to score five of the next six points and ended the match 27-25.

“We seem to be more steady under pressure,” said Skoch. “We put them in situations like this in practice where they have to come from behind and win, and it’s good to see that it’s paying off.”

Junior Ashley Davis led the Lady Buffs with 17 kills in the match. Junior Stormi Lancaster racked up 15 kills on the night. Junior Lauren Beville registered 12 digs for WT, and LSC assist leader junior Lacy Hayes dished out 43 assists.
