No. 13 Lady Buffs Sweep Bulldogs
The No. 13 WTAMU Lady Buffs volleyball team traveled to Weatherford, Okla. on Nov. 31 to battle former Lone Star Conference member Southwestern Oklahoma State University. WT defeated SWOSU 26-24, 25-22 and 25-14 to improve to 28-2 overall.
The Lady Buffs opened game one by taking a 12-7 lead. The Bulldogs went on a 7-2 run to tie the score at 14. With WT up 24-22, SWOSU scored two to tie, but the Lady Buffs got the next two to take the set 26-24.
WT built leads of 6-2 and 15-8 early in the second set. While up 21-14, the Lady Buffs were outscored 8-4. However, WT was still able to win the game 25-22.
“We were still hung over from our win against ASU and could not mentally bring it,” said Head Coach Jason Skoch. “SWOSU came to play and to fight.”
SWOSU opened set three with a 6-7 lead. WT came back with a 13-2 run to take a 19-9 lead. Despite outscoring the Lady Buffs 6-5 at the end of the set, the Bulldogs fell short of continuing the match. Continue reading

Lady Buffs soccer clinches a spot in LSC playoffs
The Lady Buffs have had a rough go lately with a record of four losses in seven games during October. However, the memory of those losses faded away on Oct. 28 as WTAMU clinched a spot in the Lone Star Conference tournament by defeating Eastern New Mexico University 2-1.
ENMU got the first tally when they scored 16:23 into the first half. The Zias gained momentum from the goal but wouldn’t be able to build on it as Lady Buffs player Leslie Briggs tied the game with a little less than four minutes left in the half. Jessie Thomas would break the tie less than two minutes later, sending the teams to intermission with the Lady Buffs leading.
The second half saw a lot of back-and-forth action but there would be no more scores, giving WT the 2-1 win.
“We’ve lost quite a few here lately and it felt really good to win,” Head Coach Chad Webb said. “We paid tribute to our seniors before we played and that’s always a little emotional, but we knew that winning the game today would put us into the conference tournament for sure. I thought that the girls were either motivated by the senior night or the chance to get into the tournament and maybe some other things.”
On Oct. 30, the Lady Buffs returned to No. 2-ranked Abilene Christian University to make up a postponed game from earlier in the season.
The first period saw multiple attempted shots for both teams as the goalkeepers worked overtime to keep their net safe. After 45 minutes, the teams would leave the field tied 0-0. The official shot tally for the half would be 8-5 in favor of the Lady Buffs.
The second period began similarly as both teams assaulted the nets. But a ball finally found the net when ACU’s Ashley Craig got the ball past Yvette Bedoy a little over 30 minutes into the half. WT registered seven shots in the half but wouldn’t score, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 victory.
The team will hit the road for the LSC Women’s Soccer Championship next weekend back in Abilene. Sixth-seeded WT will take on ENMU at 11 a.m. on Nov 3.
“I think we have a good chance [at the tournament],” Midfielder Kelsey Wright said. “There have been times in the past that the sixth-seed team has won the tournament. It’s not out of reach, we just have to put forth our top effort all game, every game.”
The Lady Buffs end the regular season with an overall record of 8-9-1 and an LSC record of 5-8-1.

Men’s Soccer Keeps No-Lose Streak Alive
While the Buffaloes only have one more weekend of games to play this season, the team managed to keep their no-lose streak alive on Oct. 28 against No. 12-ranked University of the Incarnate Word.
“We were hoping to turn it into getting into playoffs, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen,” Forward Wayne Bruton said. “But it’s a positive run for next season.”
The Buffs last loss of the season, and only loss in October, came at the hands of Incarnate Word on Oct. 2 on the road with a score of 3-1. Continue reading

Lady Buffs come from behind to beat Angelo State
The No. 12 WTAMU Lady Buffs volleyball team hosted the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Oct. 27 for Senior Night. WT swept ACU 25-16, 25-5 and 25-11, boosting their record to 26-2 overall and 16-1 in Lone Star Conference action.
Erika Dupree was the lone senior the Lady Buffs honored. Fittingly enough, she had a huge game with three kills, two solo blocks and four block assists and she picked up three digs on the night.
“[Dupree’s] is the type of person everybody gets along with, but still respects,” Head Coach Jason Skoch said. “The team plays hard for her.” Continue reading
No. 12 Lady Buffs Tame Mustangs
The No. 12 WTAMU Lady Buffs volleyball team traveled to Wichita Falls on Oct. 25 to face the Midwestern State Mustangs. WT dropped MSU in straight sets 25-22, 25-10 and 25-12, improving their record to 25-2 overall and 15-1 in the Lone Star Conference.
The Lady Buffs struggled through most of the first set. WT was able to keep MSU within striking distance at 19-20, however. The Lady Buffs got in rhythm to put an end to the first set with a 6-2 run.
WT dominated the second set going up 17-3. The Mustangs went on a brief 6-1 run to pull the score to 18-9. The Lady Buffs squashed the rally with a 7-1 run of their own to finish the set.
MSU built a 9-7 lead early in the third game, as they traded points with WT. The Lady Buffs, however, flexed their muscles by ending the set and the match with an 18-3 run.
“That was a good game because we did that to a good team,” Head Coach Jason Skoch said.
Junior Stormi Lancaster and sophomore Ashley Davis each registered 11 kills. Junior Sarah Martin also had 10 kills on the night. WT was led defensively by junior Lacy Hayes, who had 14 digs and 35 assists.
The Lady Buffs return to The Box on Oct. 27 to square off against Abilene Christian for Senior Night. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
