A Dive-In Movie will be featured in the Virgil Henson Activities Center at the recreational pool from 8-10:00 p.m on Sept. 19.
This event is free for VHAC members and students and $5 for non-members. The Dive-In is open to all in the Canyon and West Texas A&M University community.
“The Dive-In movie is open to anyone in the community. We have the pool open, with music and snacks,” Alex Montoya, senior Mass Communications major and CORE event coordinator, said.
Students and community members will be able to watch “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” while swimming or siting on the pool patio.
Montoya suggests that students bring swimming suits, beach towels, goggles and pool toys.
This year, the Dive-In movie will be held on International Talk Like a Pirate Day, a parody holiday dedicated to speaking the entire day like a pirate.
According to Montoya, the holiday inspired the movie selection for the event.
This is the second Dive-In movie hosted by WTAMU CORE at the VHAC pool. Last year’s dive-in movie feature was the 1975 thriller, Jaws.
“The last Dive-In sounded like a neat event and I figured, let’s bring it back and see how it works out again,” Montoya said.
The Dive-In movie is a collaborative event between WTAMU CORE and the Resident Hall Association.
“We are pretty excited to have it. We partnered up with WTAMU Resident Hall Association, which is an organization that puts on events for students living on campus,” Montoya said. Montoya and CORE worked with RHA to promote the Dive-n movie among WTAMU students.
“I figured, if we are trying to reach people who live on campus, and who don’t have anything to do on a Friday night, let’s get in the dorms and advertise the dive-in movie,” Montoya said.
Montoya said he wants to give students a sense of community by attending on campus events.
“We heard about the dive-in movie a little later when it was already planned. Alex needed some help by making people hear more about it,” Kimberly Polleri, sophomore Biotechnology major and RHA president, said.RHA is a committee that represents residents at WTAMU and develops activities to include students on and off campus.
“Our events are mostly social where everyone can join and have some fun, meet new people, get out of their rooms and do something different,” Polleri said. Polleri said students interested in upcoming events should be aware of flyers, poster and banners that are displayed on campus.
“To hear about our events, something that also helps is participation in Hall Council. Students, this way, are informed about upcoming events and what is happening around campus,” Polleri said. Students have the option to vote and voice their opinions by participating in Hall Council meetings. RHA delegates are elected by Hall Councils and represent their residence hall.
“It is important for students to socially interact and attend Hall Council meetings,” Josh Vaughan, freshman Psychology Criminal Justice major, said. “It builds the basis for students to be comfortable around each other and not have a negative outlook on college.”
Vaughan said Hall Council delegates are also given the opportunity to participate in planning and carrying out various hall programs and events.
