On Jan. 15, the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs defeated Angelo State 81-42.  With the win, the Lady Buffs improved to 12-1 and Angelo State fell to 9-6 on the year at the First United Bank Center. The Lady Buffs exploded offensively where senior guard Raven Gerald and sophomore guard Danielle Logan scored 15 points, and junior forward Chontiquah White added 14.  WT shot 49 percent from the field and out rebounded Angelo State 50-26.  WT’s defense held Angelo State to just 27.5 percent shooting from the field.

The Lady Buffs returned home Jan. 18 to host Texas A&M Kingsville. WT dominated with strong defense and went up early against the Javelinas. Texas A&M Kingsville couldn’t get any offense going to close out the first half and were down 46-25. Scoring leaders for the first half included Logan with nine points, while White and senior guard Casey Land had eight points. Lauren Jay led TAMU-Kingsville with ten points.

At halftime, WTAMU honored former WT women’s basketball players, coaches and managers to celebrate the 50th season of WT women’s basketball.

WT came out strong in the second half, hitting a three pointer, but Kingsville answered back with three straight scoring possessions. The Javelinas could not close the gap as WT’s defense held the Javelinas to 8 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half.  WT easily finished the game, defeating Texas A&M Kingsville 82-47.

“I like what we had going on in the first half and being able to be up by that much is a good thing,” coach Mark Kellogg said after the Kingsville game. “Closing out games is important and we did just that tonight.”

Next up, WT has a battle for first place with rival Tarleton State on Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m. in the First United Bank Center. Tarleton State has a 13-2 record on the season and 4-1 on conference play while WT is 4-0 in league play and have a record of 13-1 on the season.
