The Turkey Fun Run has been a program sponsored by WTAMU Rec Sports since its first race approximately 30 years ago and has been held every year since. This year participants of the fun run had a chance of winning a $15 Wal-Mart gift card, which would be given to three men and three women for first, second, and third placers.

“Back in the day racers had a chance of taking home an actual turkey,” William Craddock, Director of Recreational Sports, said. “Even losers could win a Turkish game hen for coming in last and for just competing, which did cause some people to just walk the race.”

On Nov. 21, racers took positions along the starting line. Within only a few minutes, WT’s own Joshua Olvera came to the head of the pack, and finished the race clocking in at 7 minutes and 58 seconds. Not far behind Olvera, was Meghan Bass, a current WT student, placing first in women’s division clocking in at 9 minutes and 59 seconds.

“It felt great to win,” Bass, women division first place winner, said. “And the $15 [gift card] was worth the cold.”

Bass also noted, that she plans on competing next year.

After the run, the first, second, and third male and female placers were announced and collected their prizes. After a few photo opportunities, first place and previous year winner of the male division, Olvera gave advice for future participants.

“Dress accordingly for the cold, and always finish strong,” Olvera said.
