WT’s intramural sports season is officially underway, with flag football games taking place this month at Buffalo Sports Park.

With student enrollment higher than any other time at WT, Senior Sports & Exercise Science major and Intramurals Assistant Toby Dennis supports the idea of participation among freshmen.

“I think freshmen should participate to get to know people and get that college experience,’’ Dennis said. “They obviously can get a workout in, or can continue playing sports they did in high school at a competitive but not overly competitive level.”

The diversity among participants created by WT’s intramural sports has allowed students to discover peers with various backgrounds and different interests from their own. Senior Sports & Exercise Science major Clinton Combs said he has enjoyed his experiences in intramural sports and the people he encountered.

“Some of the people I met through intramural sports when I was freshman are my friends today, and coming here I didn’t know many people because I came from another state,” Combs said. “Intramurals helped me meet people through similar interest, and it wasn’t awkward because we were playing sports, and working as a team.’’

The opportunity to become entrenched in intramurals extends beyond just flag football, and signing up is becoming easier.

“One of the main things that we’ll emphasize is they have to a sign a participation consent form, which is just basically about injuries and basic stuff, and we’re going to start that online this year, where they’ll have to make a profile on imleagues.com,’’ Senior Sports & Exercise major and Intramural assistant Tyler Manasco said. “Football’s starting and then we have volleyball, basketball next semester, and smaller sports in between like racquetball, and golf scrambles.’’

Participation in intramural sports is encouraged for new and current students this fall semester.
