University SING is Back!

[ 0 ] April 16, 2013 |

University SING is back for its second year after a 3 year hiatus. University SING is a competition in which University organizations compete amongst one another. This year, the theme is California Dreamin’. The winner is awarded a travelling trophy, which their name is engraved on, and bragging rights for the next year.

The panel of judges has been selected this year and includes Marc Jones, who is heavily involved with the Amarillo Little Theatre, and Sheryl Anderson, who is the owner and director of Anderson Model & Talent Agency. The last of the judges is WT alum and Academy Director of the Amarillo Little Theater Jason Crespin.

University SING will be Wednesday, April 17 at 8 p. m. at the Legacy Hall. Admission will be $3. The students who can’t make the April 17 the performance can attend the dress rehearsal that will be the day prior, and admission will only be $1.

“For dress rehearsal, it’s basically where all the organizations get to watch each other and see what everyone has come up with,” said Nicole Moore, Senior, Communications major, and a CORE Consultant.

There are going to be 5 performances this year. Phi Delta Theta has teamed up with Chi Omega. Zeta Tau Alpha and Kappa Alpha are performing together. Music honor societies, Tau Beta Sigma, and Kappa Kappa Psi will be together. Alpha Tau Omega will be performing as solo, and last will be WT’s all women step team, the Lady Ex.

“It’s a long standing tradition, always fun to see how creative our students can get,” said Skip Chisum, Director of Student Activities.

Last year’s University SING was won by Delta Zeta and Phi Delta Theta. The theme last year was 80’s. It was in Mary Moody Northen Hall. There were about 600 people in attendance to watch 6 organizations perform in 3 shows.

“They had costumes, the songs, [and] a little love story set,” said Moore.

Steven Gelitski, who was a part of the winning team last year, anticipates this year’s performance.

“Last year, we practiced 2-3 times a week for a month,” he said. “The most fun part is getting the costumes, and really bonding over getting everything together.”

This year, University SING will be dedicated to AJ Swope, who was a WT grad, and a judge on last year’s panel. He passed away on January 15, 2013 in a car accident.
