Every year Student Activities goes to a Student Activities Showcase where there are presentations featuring singers, musicians, magicians, and comedians. This year, they have booked Marc LaMotte. He will be coming to the Legacy Hall Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 5 p.m.

“We’ve worked with his agency before, so it was really easy getting him here,” Stephanie Brackett, the assistant director of Student Activities, said. Last month, CORE was able to get musician Nelly Echo from The Voice here, but when it comes to comedians, it is somewhat different than a musical performance.

“It’s a really fun thing for students to see. It’s a great stress reliever, and it just gets students’ minds off of studies,” Brackett said.

At the Student Activities Showcase, there were also some WT students and student consultants.

“He was really good in the showcase, really laid back,” Nicole Moore, a senior Communications major, said after she saw LaMotte perform.

LaMotte has been to Texas twice before, once for the World Series of Comedy in San Antonio and another in Houston for a National Association of Campus Activities.

The panhandle’s various weather patterns aren’t an issue for Moore either.

“I’m actually looking forward to the warm weather,” LaMotte said. “When I was a student I would bring in a lot of comics, and bands, but I never expected that now I would be getting the opportunity to perform across the country and at many universities.”

LaMotte got his start in comedy when he was still in college. He happened to run into an agent who booked comedians and they “hit it off”. There was a comedy club he would get into by stealing his friend’s I.D. since LaMotte was still underage at the time. He soon became a regular.

“He is so eye catching because of his voice,” Moore said, “When you see him you’re going to think, ‘I’ve seen him on TV before.’”
LaMotte furthered his career as a comedian when he was encouraged by his wife to enter Athens Last Comic Standing. At the time, he was working as an adviser at the University of Georgia. Before LaMotte knew it, he was a semifinalist and went on to win the competition.

“I never really thought I would make a living out of this,” he said.
