The Tigers will send ace Justin Verlander to the mound and the Giants will send Barry Zito to the hill. Both teams reached the playoffs in similar ways, but their road to the World Series has been quite different. Both teams had to come from behind in the latter part of the season to win their respective divisions.
However, the Tigers didn’t have much trouble with their playoff opponents. The Tigers pulled out a 3-2 Divisional Series win over the Oakland A’s after taking a 2-0 lead. Detroit handed the New York Yankees a four-game sweep in the American League Championship Series that was never really that close.
The Giants on the other hand, have had to battle back from some tough situations. San Fran rallied after falling behind 2-0 to the Cincinnati Reds in the Divisional Series to take the series 3-2. The Giants went through much of the same in the National League Championship Series, defeating the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 after falling behind St. Louis 3-1.
Now the two teams paths are crossing and the two teams are both built very similar. Both teams are built around a young pool of pitching talent. The main difference between the two is that Detroit is known for having one of the most potent offenses in baseball. The primary matchup to watch will definitely be the Tiger offense against the, at times, dominant pitching of the Giants.
Personally speaking, each of these teams has a very bright future and has recently won a World Series crown. The Tigers won the 2006 World Series against the St. Louis in six games. San Fran defeated the Texas Rangers in 2010 in five games for their first world championship since moving from Brooklyn in 1957. My pick for this World Series is Detroit in six.
