Softball Beats Eastern New Mexico 20-0 on Tuesday

The No. 25 Lady Buffs won their eighth straight game in impressive fashion on April 17 at Lady Buff Yard. The softball team took on the Eastern New Mexico Zias for the third time in a week and played their third game in 72 hours.

The team started off the scoring with the first player to the plate when Alyssa Lemos sent one over the wall in left center field for a solo homerun. Meghan Brown and Renee Erwin added to that total, bringing in two runners each to leave the first inning up 5-0.

The third inning really saw the Lady Buffs shine as they scored 15 runs on 18 batters. The team showed that they worked well under pressure, scoring 13 of the runs with two outs on the board. The women left the inning with a 20-0 lead.

The rest of the game was relatively calm with WT bringing in Amber Spencer to close the game in the fourth inning. Neither team scored any runs for the rest of the five-inning game.

Allie Cranfill led the team with six RBIs; teammate Lemos, Erwin and Mercedes Garcia would record three RBIs each to tie for the second spot on the sheet.

“I’m really relaxed on the plate and wanting to get on base anyway I can,” Cranfill said. “Today I got struck out in my first at bat, came back, got a single and double and just helped my team out to get RBIs and runs.”

Marci Womack was the starting pitcher for the Tuesday night game and only gave up one hit and one walk with no runs. Spencer only gave up two walks with no runs and no hits.

“We’re swinging the bat very well right now,” Head Coach Kevin Blaskowski said, “We’re swinging with a lot of confidence. To go out and start the game with a home run, that’s just a great start. We’ve hit 12 home runs in our last 11 games and have had about 30 RBIs in that time frame and we’ve just had a great run. Now the key is if we can do that this weekend.”

The action continues at Lady Buff Yard this weekend starting with a double header on April 20 at 5 p.m.
