The No. 22 WTAMU Buffalo baseball team hosted the No. 25 Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas for a four-game series from April 13-15. The Buffs and Javelinas traded wins for a 2-2 weekend split; the fourth consecutive split in a Lone Star Conference series for WT.

“I don’t like splitting at home, but we’re competing,” said Head Coach Matt Vanderburg.

The Buffs fell behind 4-2 after the second inning of the series opener on April 13. After four scoreless inning both teams put up three runs in the seventh and TAMUK added one in the ninth for an 8-5 win. Junior Paul Pulley (1-3) got the loss, going six innings and giving up four runs on seven hits.WT trailed 4-0 in the third inning of the early game on April 14 when senior Kendall Boone hit a two-run double to cut the deficit in half. The Buffs would put up a six spot in the fourth and another eight runs in the sixth on their way to a 16-6 win. Junior Ryan Houston (4-2) picked up the win, going six innings and giving up six runs on seven hits.

The Javelinas took control of the late game in the early innings and never looked back. TAMUK took a 5-0 lead after the third and then put three runs on the board in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings in their 15-3 win. Junior Billy Gonzalez (5-1) got his first loss of the season pitching three innings and giving up five hits and five runs.

WT got off to a good start in the series finale on April 15 when Boone and senior Jordan Easom hit back-to-back homers to give the Buffs a 4-0 lead after one. The Javelinas tied the game at 6-6 in the third before WT scored two in the fifth and one more in the sixth to get the 9-6 win.

“In baseball, you can have a bad day and bounce back quickly,” Boone said. “We really responded well today.”

The Buffs are now 26-12 overall with a 13-7 mark in the LSC. WT’s next game will be in San Antonio against the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals on April 20 at 1 p.m.
