International professors reveal how they became part of WTAMU

A year later, Ohio University attempted to recruit Osei-Hwere again.

“My husband and I decided it was a great opportunity, so we said, ‘let’s see what happens,’” she said.

After graduating from Ohio University, Osei-Hwere taught courses in popular culture, media globalization and world broadcasting systems.

After teaching at Ohio University for four years, she and her husband set out in search of a smaller community. “We were looking for a small community that still had available amenities,” she said.

She came across WT and found that it was the right fit.

“The atmosphere here was very different,” she said. “Everyone was very kind and friendly and it was genuine, not superficial.”

Osei-Hwere felt like her opinion mattered to the University, even during the interview process before she became a faculty member.

“I found that the department was everything I imagined it would be,” she said. “I’m fully supported by my department head and my opinion here really matters.”

After her first year at WT, Osei-Hwere and her husband bought a house.

“That’s a big investment,” she said. “That’s not something you do unless you really love where you are.”

Osei-Hwere said she loves her students and feels that they are very intelligent.

“They are invested in being here and they value their education,” she said. “My students are at a point where they are doing exactly what they want to do and they work really hard.”

Osei-Hwere intends to go back to Ghana someday because Ghana is her home. She said it is hard to be so far from her family, especially during special occasions.

However, the faculty at WT has become part of her family. Her son turned two years old this week and several faculty members attended his birthday party.

“That’s not part of their job requirement,” she said. “They just do it because they’re good people. It’s nice to be surrounded by people who care so much.”

  1. I’m thankful for Dr. O. She was a great teacher and always a delight to be around. That as well, isn’t part of the job requirements :)
