Ladies raise awareness about ovarian cancer

On March 26, the Lady Buffs defeated the Texas Woman’s Pioneers, 7-0, to take the weekend series behind junior Marci Womack’s incredible pitching performance. This day was also marked with the Beat Cancer with a Bat Benefit.

The Lady Buffs and the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition hosted Beat Cancer with a Bat to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. Throughout the day, T-shirts as well as other items were sold to raise funds for the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. Information regarding ovarian cancer was also passed out.

“It was a wonderful experience for everyone who attended the event,” Coach Kevin Blaskowski said. “It was very special for Alyssa [Lemos] and her family and also the entire WT Softball family.”

Lemos lost her mother to ovarian cancer two years ago.

During the game, senior Kacey Henderson began the scoring with a two run double, giving WT a 2-0 lead in the third. The Lady Buffs would add four runs in the sixth. Sophomore Meghan Slattery hit a three run homerun to make it 6-0. WT would cap off the 7-0 win when Henderson scored on a throwing error. Womack (12-3) dominated TWU giving up two hits with seven strikeouts in a complete game shutout.

“Marci was dominant in the circle and our offense did a great job,” Coach Blaskowski said. “Meghan topped off a big day with a huge homerun in the sixth inning.”

The Lady Buffs will next play host to Lubbock Christian. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. on March 29.
