Lady Buffs honor lone senior

Buff fans honored WT’s lone senior, Megan McLain, after she lead the Lady Buffs to a 75-59 victory over Midwestern State on “Senior Night” at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas, on Saturday.

Despite falling to the Mustangs in double-overtime this past Wednesday, the Lady Buffs picked up the highly needed victory, moving them one step close to a spot in the LSC tournament.

“We knew we had to battle back from Wednesday’s loss and we’d have to do it defensively,” said WT head coach Krista Gerlich. “Our goal was to hold Savannah Carver to under 10 points and to hold their team to 55. We almost achieved that. Carver had eight and with about a minute left their team was sitting on 55 points.”

MSU pulled the game within 13 points in the second half but never recovered from the deficient. The Lady Buffs scored 25 points on their 22 forced turnovers on the night. MSU kept the game close by shooting 85 percent from the line, while WT shot 79 percent from the free throw line and 55 percent from the floor. WT did struggle with the boards against Midwestern state, After four games the Lady Buffs were out-rebounded 28-25.

The Lady Buffs were lead by Senior Megan McLain (3L, Channing, Texas) with 11 points and Jamie Simmons (Jr-1L, Houston, Texas) with 14. Saturday’s game puts Simmons just 40 points shy of 1,000 career-points.

“We are literally taking each game one at a time. The LSC South is so tight that you can’t have any off nights,” Gerlich said. “We still believe that we have a lot of basketball left to play this year.”

The Lady Buffs take on Incarnate Word at home this Wednesday, Feb. 23. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
