Buffs survive scare against Commerce

Rally from 15 points down to claim victory

The WTAMU Men’s basketball team was on the road Dec. 11 against Texas A&M Commerce in Commerce, Texas.

WT got everything it could handle and more from the Lions, but in the end the Buffs escaped with a 76-75 victory to remain undefeated on the season.

In the first half, WT held an early 2-0 lead, but that was about as good as it was going to get for the Buffs.  Commerce took control shortly after that and enforced its will on the Buffs’ defense, holding a 38-23 lead at the 2:38 mark.

WT cut into that lead before heading for the locker room, when the halftime buzzer sounded the Buffs were only down 38-29.

The second half started much like the first did, with the Lions controlling the tempo of the game.  At the 14:24 mark of the second, Commerce held a commanding 51-36 lead and WT’s undefeated streak looked in serious jeopardy.

But, that’s when the momentum started to finally swing the way of the maroon and white.  With 11:36 remaining the Buffs had cut that huge lead down to 46-41.  The Buffs eventually wrestled the lead away from the Lions at the 4:17 mark at 65-64.  TAMUC never quite recovered from the shock, and collapsed to a 76-75 defeat at the hands of the Buffs.

Leading the scoring on the night was senior Jacquiese Holcomb with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Senior Joe Mincey chipped in 12 points on the night followed by fellow senior Alex Davis with 11 points and LaDarius Hall with 10 points.

The Buffs will return home Dec. 15 to take on Texas-Permian Basin with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. from the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
