#23 Lady Buffs tame Lady Lions

Get second straight road victory

The #23 ranked WTAMU Lady Buff basketball team finished up its two game road trip Dec. 11 in Commerce against Texas A&M Commerce.

WT made sure not to underestimate the winless Lady Lions as they came away with a 79-71 victory.

At the beginning of the game both teams were tied at 1-1, but things quickly changed after that as WT went on an 11-3 to help build an 18-5 lead with 14:32 remaining in the first half.

Commerce though came back with a 13-2 run of their own and brought the game back to 20-18.  The Lady Buffs got back their rhythm as they extended their lead to 28-20 at the 7:25 mark.  At halftime the Lady Buffs held a 37-29 lead.

The second half proved to be a scrappy affair with Commerce threatening throughout.  At the 17:03 mark, the Lady Lions had pulled back to within four points at 42-38.

With 4:44 remaining in regulation and the Lady Buffs holding a 67-53 lead, it looked as though things were well in hand.  But, TAMUC had other ideas, making life extremely difficult for the Lady Buffs.  In the end though, it wasn’t enough as WT came away with a 79-71 win.

Leading the scoring on the night for WT was junior Jamie Simmons with 23 points followed by freshman Casey Land with 17 points.

The Lady Buffs will now take a break for finals before facing Central Oklahoma on Dec. 18 with tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m. from the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
