With 16 years teaching at West Texas A&M University, Associate History Professor Dr. Marty Kuhlman, was chosen to write WT’s Centennial Book,
Always WT. The book release and signing took place Monday, March 22 from 3-6 p.m. at the Cornette Library on Campus.
Marty Kuhlman says, “When WT was having a centennial, they decided they wanted someone to record the history of the institution. I have a background; I grew up at WT, and now I am a teacher at WT.”
Even though WT has been a big part of his life, the author still had to research for more than 1,000 hours in order to write the 100-years of the University.
The 550-page book tells much of the history of WT, with interesting facts about the University since its establishment in 1909 until its current plans for the second century.
Danny Brill, freshman student at WT said, “It’s good for students to understand the personal life’s of people before.”
Writing the Centennial Book took the author six years to finish. This would not have been possible without Dr. Sue Park, professor emeritus of English, who served as the editor of the book, and the Centennial book committee members that included Beth Duke, Dr. Fred Rathjen, Geneva Schaeffer, Dr. J Pat Stephens and Jodi Thomas.
This book is very important for the City of Canyon and for the Panhandle area as a whole. The evolution of the institution has helped Canyon and its citizens grow.
Kuhlman said, “WT is a big part of the community. WT has grown up with Canyon, and Canyon has grown up with WT.”
Danny Brill agreed. “I am excited; I think it’s great. It’s good for the University, for the students and for the faculty.”
A second book signing will take place at the Cornette Library Saturday, March 27 from 7-9 p.m.
