The Good, The Bad, The Ugly – Super Bowl Memories

4 February 2010 162 views View Comments

The day has finally arrived. Friends come over, snacks on the table. Everyone is so exited.

For many, the Super Bowl has always been the waited event of the year, but where does it come from?

It all began in 1966 when the NFL (National Football League) and the AFL (American Football League) merged. The NFL-AFL World Championship was created as a piece of the merging agreement.

What about the name? During negotiations, the Kansas City Chief owner, Lamar Hunt, thought of the name “Super Bowl,” after watching her daughter play with her toy Super Ball.

This name was supposed to be temporary until something better was thought of. When the day of the event came, it still did not have a name so it was named “The NFL-AFL World Championship Game.”

In 1967, the first game took place and both, the fans and the media, took the short unofficial name instead of the long one. In 1969, “Super Bowl” became the official name of the championship.

Since then, every year, fans gather around to watch the Super Bowl, an event that brings people together creating long-lasting memories.

“I’ve liked all the ones I spent with my friends over the years. More than any of them, I will say, last year when I spent it in Dallas with my family was the best.”

“My roommate locked me out of our house in the cold after the team I was cheering for won and her team lost.”

The best thing about the Super Bowl is getting to sit down with family and watching the game. Ordering pizza, snacking on chips and drinking cokes. It is just like another holiday.”

“My sophomore year of high school’s Super Bowl is one I will never forget. Although I have no idea who played in the actual football game or who even won, it was a night I will never forget. I had the biggest crush on this guy that didn’t go to high school with me, but we lived in the same town. He asked if I was doing anything for the Super Bowl and I said, “Well no.” He asked if he could come over! Of course I said yes. So we sat at my house and watched the game with my dad (that wasn’t going to leave us alone) and we had a great time. Then he walked me to the door and gave me the most romantic kiss ever. I was so nervous, but he made everything better. We dated for the next two years! Thank goodness for the Super Bowl!”
