The #13-ranked Lady Buff soccer team routed the #22 Midwestern State Mustangs 3-1 in front of 155 fans at the Pitch.
“It was a big win, and I am very happy that we won,” senior forward Miriam Dominguez said. “Since I’ve been here we’ve been 1-3 against this Midwestern team. It’s my last year, and we had to win. Now, we have a chance to win conference.”
With this loss, Midwestern’s record falls to 10-2-2 (4-2 LSC). The win lifts WTAMU to 10-2-1 (4-2 LSC) on the season.
With this win, WT still has a chance at hosting the Lone Star Conference Tournament at home. If the Lady Buffs lose one of their next four games, they will forfeit the right to have the tournament at home.
“It’s a lot more fun to play in front of everyone that knows you at home,” sophomore midfielder Lindsay McHorse said.
It’s easier because you know the field and you know how the conditions are.”
Dominguez started the scoring early with a shot from the top of the box in the 8th minute of play raising her season total for goals to six.
“It’s really awesome to be one of the lead scorers since it’s my last year,” Dominguez said. “I want to make an impact and be a good model for the freshmen, so they can do even better.”
Assisted by Dominguez, McHorse grabbed the second goal for the Lady Buffs, blasting a shot past the goalie from six yards.
“I knew it was going to be a really hard game, so I was really glad we got two right off the bat,” McHorse said.
Sophomore forward for the Mustangs, Kelsey Hill, answered back in the second half with a shot from inside the box assisted by teammate Brittany O’Neal.
McHorse wrapped up the scoring when she faced Mustang goalie Mallory Whitworth one-on-one from eight yards assisted by freshman midfielder Melissa Carnero.
“I’m really glad we won it because last season we lost to them,” McHorse said. “This win was a big step for us and it gives us a chance to win conference again.”
McHorse now leads the Lady Buffs in scoring tallying 11 goals for the season. She also shares the lead in assists with Dominguez, each with six.
Junior goalkeeper Kelly Skehan improved her record to 7-2-1 as she picked up the win in goal with six saves in her 90 minutes on the field.
The Lady Buffs host home games this weekend against Angelo State on Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. and Abilene Christian Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
