The Lady Buffs are undefeated in the Lone Star Conference as they defeated Angelo State in The Box on Saturday, Sept. 19. The Lady Buffs beat the Rambelles 25-20, 25-17, and 25-17 in front of 628 fans.
“It’s an atmosphere you can’t create anywhere else,” senior setter Katie Rickwartz said.
The fans are right on top of you. We have some of the best fans in the whole conference. Anytime you can get all those crazy people yelling behind you, it can’t beat it.”
The outcome lifted the Lady Buffs to a 13-2 (2-0 LSC) record and brought the Rambelles to a 9-6 (1-1 LSC) record.
Freshmen middles Chelsea Gibson and Kaitlyn Standard brought a fight against the Lady Buffs having the most kills for the Rambelles.
Gibson’s eight kills and Standard’s seven thwarted Lady Buff blockers.
Senior right side hitter Laura Prinsen fought back with 12 kills. Prinsen was closely followed by senior outside hitter Natalie Johnson with 10.
The first set was a fight for the Lady Buffs as they struggled to put points on the board. As possession rallied back and forth between the teams, WT managed to pull away making the score 25-20. With a hitting percent nine times greater than their opponent’s, the Lady Buffs (.217) overpowered the Rambelles(.024).
The Lady Buffs took the second set 25-17 with 15 kills and a .217 hitting percent against Angelo State’s 12 kills and .205 hitting percent.
“Angelo State is going to be a little slower paced than us, so we had to play our game.” freshman libero Lauren Beville said.
WT picked up the win in the third set 25-17. Angelo State’s .061 hitting percent and 8 kills weren’t enough to defeat the Lady Buff’s .278 hitting percent and 15 kills.
“We’ll keep rising to the challenge.” head coach Jason Skoch said. “I just want to see us control our energy and our focus more instead of letting the other team’s play and ability to control it.”
Rickwartz totaled 36 assists for the match and two kills to help her team to victory.
The next conference game for the Lady Buffs is on Thursday as they face Texas A&M-Commerce at 7 p.m. in Commerce.
