The West Texas A&M Buffaloes shut out the Mustangs of the University of the Southwest at the Pitch with a score of 5-0 on Sunday, Sept. 21.

The win improves the #19-ranked Buffs to a record of 6-1-1 and drops the Mustangs to 4-3-0.

The Buffs struggled against defenders in the first half with 12 shots on goal and only one point. From three yards, sophomore defender Nicki Nielsen put the Buffs on the board with a goal assisted by a cross-kick from freshman midfielder Jose Chavez.

“It was a game we had to win,” Nielsen said. “We had a tough game Friday against Midwestern, but this game was one of the main games we had to win. We did a good job today.”

The second half brought more points for the Buffaloes as they put their game into hyper-drive scoring four goals.

Junior forward Ben Everson put up the second goal with a shot from six yards.

Nielsen headed another off of a header-assist from sophomore defender Colin Bjostad. Freshman midfielder Manuel Garcia and senior midfielder Sterling Turner put away the following goals for the Buffaloes.

With five goals this season, Everson now leads the Buffs, and senior midfielder Aaron Thorton has the most assists with three.

Mustang goalkeeper David Metcalfe picked up 12 saves in his 90 minutes of playing time, but it was sophomore goalkeeper Sebastian Furness that grabbed the win in goal for the Buffaloes with one save in his 63 plus minutes of playing time.

“Their teams have improved a lot,” Butch Lauffer, head coach said. “Their coach is working hard and doing a good job. They are really organized and made it difficult for us to play the whole game.”

Men’s soccer looks forward to facing the #7 ranked Incarnate Word on Friday, Sept 25 in San Antonio at 7 p.m.
