Lady Buffs close to playoff berth

A playoff spot for the WTAMU softball team is dependant upon Texas A&M-Kingsville losing one game in the regular season’s final weekend.

The Lady Buffs were one win away from getting into the playoffs on their own, but the weather did not cooperate.

After taking the first two games against Eastern New Mexico, 10-1 and 6-3, the third game was cancelled due to rain.

“It was frustrating to know we had our shot,” Erin Hartigan, senior outfielder, said.  “The weather just refused to let that happen today.”

Seniors Breanna Adams, Jessica Ruzicki and Hartigan each said their goal was to make an impact in the playoffs from day one of the season.

Hartigan and Adams have been in the softball program since its reboot in 2005.

Since the reinstatement, the Lady Buffs have yet to make the playoffs.

“It would mean so much to us to be the first senior class to lead this team in the playoffs,” Adams said. “The younger players have a strong desire to win and I think that will help with their success.”

Ultimately, a fellow senior shares the same point of view.

“It’s exciting,” Hartigan said. “If we reach our goal, who knows how things will turn out.”

WT will wrap up the regular season portion of its schedule on Saturday, April 18.

They host St. Gregory’s University. Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m at the Lady Buff Yard.
